Layers of the Earth, Plate Tectonics, and the Rock Cycle, Oh My!

Recently, we started our unit on Earth Science. We started out this unit by going over the layer of the earth.  If you need a refresher, here is a picture to remind you.
Our next area of study was on plate tectonics. Here we discussed how earth's crust is constantly changing because of the plates below. Students were amazed at how somethings mile, and mile below them would effect them here on the surface. After teaching the plate boundaries. (convergent, divergent and transform) the students became the teachers and put together keynote presentations to present to the class. Their projects were absolutely AMAZING. They included pictures, notes, songs and video. Ask your child about their project. It still should be on their iPad.

The thing we are working on now is the rock cycle! How fun! Students will be completing a lab later on to demonstrate how the rock cycle works using crayons. EXCITING! We LOVE labs in 5th grade! AAAANNNDDD, later this week the mobile STEM lab will be here to show us some super cool things having to do with Science, Technology, Engineering and Math! Stay tuned for pictures of that!

If you need any more help wit Earth Science, feel free to play my quia games as review. Remember, you should have your own user name and password to log in!
